Madison students give their take on liberty

Junior Stephen Anderson's essay, "The Purpose of Being Free," won first place in the state-wide competition and was placed in a time capsule along with 49 other essays from winners in other states. The event honored Abraham's Lincoln's 200th birthday, and the time capsule will be opened in 2059 at Lincoln's 250 birthday.
Two other students from the Madison School District also did well in the state competition.
Gavin Howard, who will be a senior at Madison Senior High School this upcoming school year received second place for his essay, "The Potter's Wheel."
Honorable mention was given to Ben Robbins, a student at Madison Junior High School, for his essay, "Liberty, A Long Sought-After Treasure."
On Wednesday, the Standard Journal received the essays from Madison School District. Excerpts of all three are featured in the subscriber-only online edition.
Students throughout Madison School District honored Lincoln's birthday earlier this year with a three-month celebration called "Lincoln's Legacy: With Charity for All."
